The county is named after explorer and Presidential Candidate John C. Fremont (Jan 21, 1813 - July 13, 1890). He was known as The Great Pathfinder. He was a military officer and the first presidential candidate for the Republican Party. He was one of the first two senators from the new state of California in 1850. He was the 5th Governor of Arizona in 1878.
According to Wikipedia, he was born on January, 21, 1813 as John Charles Fremon or Louis-Rene Fremont. But either way he changed his name (either the first name or adding the t to his last name), likely in an attempt to hide his social handicap of being born out of wedlock.
